Iowa DNR is reminding people to wear lifejackets when on a river

Over a three day period between Saturday and Monday, drownings across the state claimed five lives, including those of two Fayette County residents.

That has spurred the Iowa DNR to issue a reminder to the public to wear lifejackets when on a river.  DNR officials say kids 12 and under must wear a life jacket at all times. Any boat, canoe, kayak or other watercraft must have enough life jackets for all members on board.

The Iowa DNR also says you should let others know where you will be paddling, including where you're planning to put in and where you're planning to take out, as well as when you are expected to return.  Always know your river conditions before you go paddling.

The Iowa DNR has interactive paddler's maps with updates on real-time hazards like downed trees and log jams, strainers and bridge construction.  Find individual water trail maps with access points here.
