Letter to the Editor: What has Joni Ernst been doing to protect the environment?

(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by David Kamm of Decorah):

"I recently sent a message to Joni Ernst encouraging her to resist efforts by Donald Trump and the EPA to gut environmental regulations. She sent a reply that assured me she cares about 'protecting our land and water,' as long as we do it with 'common sense and an appropriate analysis of the costs and benefits.' Unfortunately, the costs of undoing current regulations on mercury and carbon emissions can be found in environmental degradation and increased risks to public health, while the benefits go to corporate interests that line the pockets of politicians. But all may not be lost. 'As you may know,' the senator wrote, 'I am a committed recycler.' Well, that will certainly make 'em squeal. I'm afraid Joni has been working too hard. Let's help her get some rest in November."
