Construction continues at Luther College as they update their dike to meet the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) requirements.
FEMA issued a new 100-year flood map in 2013 which took into account that there have been more floods than usual in recent years. The new FEMA map predicted flood levels that would be higher than Luther's dike system. FEMA recommended that Luther should add an average of two feet to its dikes.
Work began the summer of 2018 which improved Dike Road north of the Luther tennis courts. This summer, construction continues on the south side as the levee is raised. Dike Road will also be under construction as it will eventually be centered on top of the levee.
When the project is completed, Luther College will be in compliance with FEMA standards, meaning the college doesn't have to pay higher insurance premiums for not meeting FEMA's criteria.
