This summer, Decorah Public Library (DPL) is managing their summer reading program online. On the Summer Literacy Challenge webpage, there are two challenge boards offered - one for children up to age five and one for elementary-age children to 18-year-olds. Each board has 10 activities that must be completed before turning it into the library for a prize.
The prize this year is a coupon for a free scoop of Sugar Bowl ice cream.
While the program itself may be online, there are a multitude of non-digital components. The Early Literacy Challenge board asks kids to "make cookies in letter shapes" and "take a walk outside. Talk about what you see and notice." There's drawing, picnics, and singing. The older age challenge board asks readers to "make a piece of art inspired by something you've read" and "read a book while drinking lemonade."
Also offered online through the DPL is a free, weekly newsletter offering updates on upcoming virtual programs, book recommendations, and the new "Take and Make" kits.
