Iowa Legislature goes back into session Wednesday

The Iowa Senate and the Iowa State Assembly will return to work in Des Moines on Wednesday.  The legislature has been in recess since March 16th because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Legislators have yet to agree on a state budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which starts in less than a month on July 1st.  The legislature will spend two days on non-budgetary items this week, then will spend all of next week--and more if necessary--working on the budget.

State Senator Michael Breitbach of Strawberry Point says, "Our priorities have always been growing our state, providing sustainable and reliable funding in our budgets, and passing tax reform to enable Iowans to keep more of the money they worked hard to earn. After record unemployment in our state and many families struggling to make ends meet, these priorities are more important now than ever."

In a recent Facebook post, State Representative Michael Bergan of Dorchester said, "Thanks to our hard work, we are in good position currently as we have a healthy projected surplus and full reserve accounts. Looking ahead, I will continue to put taxpayers first and insist on passing a conservative, responsible budget plan when we reconvene."
