Chris e-mails: "With Fareway not currently helping recycle cans and bottles, people are taking advantage of Spectrum's can & bottle collection site; it is looking overwhelming, not to mention a health hazard. Does Spectrum plan to clean this up, somehow without endangering their client workers?
The Answer Person says: "For an answer, we turned to Spectrum Acting Director Mike Meirick. Here's what he had to say:
'I have the same concerns as your reader does. We continue to "pickup, clean up" every day in that area. One of the challenges is separating the garbage from the bottles and cans, as some donors also include household garbage and recycling items in the bags that get dropped off.
Normally we would have help from our adults with special needs do these task, but at this time we only have one employee at Spectrum and I can guarantee you that he is doing everything he can to maintain our properties to the level we want.
Lastly, redemption centers have been closed or are running on very limited hours, we were fortunate to have taken a load to Calmar earlier this week, but we still have a few loads to go.
We are extremely happy our community donates their bottles and cans and encourage them to continue these donation, while being mindful NOT to include garbage or recycling items in bags that are dropped off. SPECTRUM IS NOT A RECYCLING CENTER. Please limit your donations to redeemable bottles and cans only. Be assured we are working hard to keep this area as neat and clean as possible.'
Thanks, Mike, for being a guest 'Answer Person!'"
