Winneshiek County Board, Daley Bridge neighbors are still disagreeing about the use of land near the bridge

Property owners neighboring the Daley Bridge don't want the area around the bridge to be used as parking places for canoers and kayakers.  But Tuesday morning, Winneshiek County Supervisors told the property owners the property is either owned by the county or the county has easement rights.  "We control the area," said supervisor Dean Thompson.

Supervisors noted they paid $1,012 for an easement from Kelly and Donna Thomas, as well as installing two new cattle gates, new fencing and a new/restored driveway; paid $333 for an easement from Joel and Amanda Thomas; paid $65,200 for the purchase of property from Jerome Henry; and paid $31,722 for dirt from Kelly and Donna Thomas.

Property owners Donna Thomas and Jerome Henry tried to get supervisors to change their minds and ban canoeists and kayakers from the area. Thomas told supervisors, "this looks like a canoe access," while Henry told the county board, "you're making it a canoe landing."

However, supervisors are sticking to their position that the property in question is under the control of the county.  Thomas and Henry have removed signs which said "Private Property—No Trespassing"—signs which turned out to be placed on county property instead of their property.  The property lines have been plotted, so both sides know which is public property and which is private property.

For now, it appears there won't be any further changes in the area of the Daley Bridge.
