Winneshiek Medical Center medical staff is getting a better understanding of how to manage mask and gown supplies

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has allowed hospitals and health facilities to once again perform elective surgeries. That means Winneshiek Medical Center has resumed surgeries this week. WMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Thomas Marquardt says physicians at the medical center have been working to get a better understanding of the best way to preserve masks, gowns and other personal protective equipment.

Marquardt says that the system which is now in place first makes sure that there is a reserve of two months' worth of supplies.  After that, any surplus of masks, gowns and other PPEs can be used for elective surgeries or other medical procedures. He explains, "there are lots of moving parts," but says the current system seems to be working for now.
