The Decorah City Council has received a letter from neighbors of the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds which complains about practice laps held from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday of the past weekend.
Council members Monday evening heard from a spokesperson for the neighbors, Benji Nichols, who said they have learned to live with the noise from the races, but "this is different." Nichols says racing has always been held at night and not during the daytime and has never been held on back-to-back days. "I don't have an issue with racing," he told city council members, but "there's never been this kind of use before."
Decorah City Council members will hold a special meeting Wednesday afternoon to discuss a variety of issues--and the racetrack noise is expected to be one of them.
