Letter to the Editor: It's the Decorah City Council versus Alliant

(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Dave Ohlert of Decorah):

"Well, here we go again.  Somewhere along the line, someone blew sunshine up someone's ### that it would be advantageous to have a Municipal Electric Utility.  We have a group that can't manage what's already on their plate, much less take on more.  They complain about rate increases while they continually increase our taxes, our mill rate, our water rates and our sewer rates.

The city is not being bullied, they're just being bullheaded.  We have always had good, reliable service from Alliant.  They have always been there to serve the public.  We have not lost our trust in them--speak for yourself.

An MEU would not offer as high quality of service, especially in the event of a storm.  We would get put back together last after crews service their own clients first.  Then, guess what, they send us a bill.

As for the $1.5 million for work along Locust Road, raise your hand if you'll do the work for free.  And the millions of dollars spent to buy Alliant's infrastructure?  Not free, either.

Just like other things (no need to elaborate) that the city got involved in, this group listens to a few squeaky wheels when making decisions.  Here's a squeaky wheel's suggestion: Times are rough for a lot of people and won't get better for awhile.  Sign the agreement and try to save people some money for once."
