Ask The Answer Person: Are RSVP services going to be rescheduled?

Posted: Tue, Apr 28, 2020 12:09 PM

Angela asks: "RSVP had to cancel tax preparations for low income and seniors due to the pandemic.  As the deadline for sending taxes has been extended to July 15, will this service be rescheduled?"

Northeast Iowa RSVP Director Deana Hageman says: "We appreciate the question and know there are many individuals and families who were impacted.  The tax program that the Northeast Iowa RSVP program operates is sponsored by AARP.  On March 16th, AARP made the decision to suspend services, resulting in our program closing.  At the same time, the locations where the tax program was provided, including the Decorah Public Library, Cresco Library, and Postville Library, closed as well.

AARP RSVP Coordinator Dale Goodman states, 'While the tax deadline is extended, unfortunately we will not be reopening as we are not willing to put anyone at risk.  Everyone who volunteers in the program is 55 and older and some have underlying health issues.  At each location, there are no options to ensure we can follow the safety guidelines set in place.' We know this is a valuable and necessary service, however, RSVP will not be re-opening this year out of concern for our volunteers and the community"
