In an email announcement, Amy Hameister of Legacy Tour Travel informed 8th grade students and their families that the annual trip to Washington, D.C. has been cancelled.
Hameister addressed families, writing, "Thank you for your patience as we have monitored the outcome of our Decorah 2020 Washington, DC trip. Unfortunately, we have come to the decision that this trip will not take place this June, as planned. While the future of June in DC is still a bit 'unknown', we do not feel comfortable continuing to hold out any longer. The safety of our travelers is very important to us."
The travel company is currently working on a possible reschedule date for July or early August of 2021 for these students and their families. These months, and not the normally chosen month of June, are the candidates for a reschuedle because combining both this year's current 8th graders and next year's class for one big excursion is just too complicated.
The organizers of the trip will be refunding money to all students and families at this time, even if a reschedule date is determined. Hameister said, "With the financial strain that many families are currently facing, we do not feel it is appropriate to hold onto any funds for the future trip."
