At this time, the annual Winneshiek County Dairy Banquet faces an uncertain future. Members of the Winneshiek County Dairy Promoters say they do not know when or if their banquet will be held, but they still plan to interview dairy royalty candidates on April 30th via a Zoom session.
This year's candidate for Dairy Princess is 17-year-old Ashley Nierling, the daughter of Matt and Jolene Nierling of Decorah. Ashley works on her family farm, Nierling Farms, which has a herd of 300 Holsteins, and milks 170 of them. They sell their milk to Foremost Farms. Ashley is a junior at Decorah High School who also is a member of the Burr Oak Blazing Builders 4H club, the Decorah FFA, and the National Honor Society.
This year's Little Miss Squirt candidate is 9-year-old Kalyse Waterman, the daughter of Toriea and Tye Moellers of Ridgeway and Todd Waterman of Waukon. Kalyse helps her step-dad on his family's farm, KG4 Farms, which has a herd of 1,000 Holsteins and milks 850. They sell their milk to Foremost Farms. Kalyse is a 4th grader at Crestwood Elementary whose hobbies include riding on the gator, playing with the calves and the cats, making crafts, and riding horses.
