Decorah's school leaders are discussing ideas for end-of-the-year events for seniors

Many had already assumed Iowa schools would remain closed for the rest of 2019/2020 year, even before Governor Reynolds' official announcement this past Friday morning.  And though the decision came as no surprise, it still spread a bit of sadness throughout Decorah.

In response to Governor Reynolds' message, Superintendent Mark Lane emailed parents, "I am sorry that our students will not be together in our buildings to learn and enjoy each other's company this spring.  I am especially sad for our seniors, who will not have the opportunity to have the senior year experiences that up to now we have taken for granted."

Brainstorming has already begun on how to provide seniors with some of the special events that would normally be filling schedules this time of year, including an in-person commencement ceremony.

Decorah High School's Associate Principal Adam Riley said, "The board of education and administration feel strongly about committing to take steps to be able to allow our seniors to have a commencement in which they will receive their diploma in person as opposed to a virtual ceremony."

Discussions are also being held to try to figure out details about other major end-of-the-year activities for seniors, such as the senior banquet and senior scholarship night.

More information will be sent out to parents as details are finalized.
