Rural Decorah resident Tim Lecander officially announces his candidacy for Winneshiek County District #5 Supervisor

Posted: Wed, Apr 15, 2020 11:10 AM

Winneshiek County Supervisor District 5 is the most crowded of this year's three election contests for spots on the Winneshiek County Board.  Democrats Mark Kuhn and Tim Lecander will square off in the June 2nd primary, as will Republicans Ronald Fulsaas and Mark Vick in the June 2nd Republican primary.  Independent Scott H. Fjelstul will join the two primary winners on the November ballot.

Lecander lives in rural Decorah, near Scenic River Road in Bluffton Township, and graduated from Decorah High School and from Luther College.  He has been a computer consultant in Information Technology for 35 years, including work as a Software Developer, Network Engineer, Consultant and Entrepreneur. He is currently employed with ArcherPoint, based in Atlanta and Minneapolis.

Lecander believes that Winneshiek County deserves better rural internet.  "During these difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic, rural residents are especially hit hard by the lack of reliable high speed broadband internet. Many families are having difficulty meeting the needs of their children for on-line learning.  Also, in the future tele-medicine will become increasingly important. I believe Winneshiek County can take a more active role in expanding rural internet access, through public or private means."

Tim believes he can bring a new set of skills to the board.  He has lived in rural communities for 30 years, and so he knows first-hand the importance of maintaining and improving the secondary road system in Winneshiek County.  He has been affected by the bridge outage at Bridge 9 (Hutchinson's). Lecander is active in forestry management of his family's 60 acres along the Upper Iowa, eliminating invasive species, promoting native tree stands, and establishing roadside brush control.
