The board of the Decorah Farmers Market, which holds markets in the lower Co-op parking lot on Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings from May through October, has decided to cancel its markets in May because of the coronavirus outbreak.
It turns out the board didn't have any other option. The Decorah Farmers Market each year signs a lease with the City of Decorah for the use of the city-owned parking lot below the Oneota Co-op. This year's lease had some new wording—including a clause that was inserted which said the market would have to shut down in the case of an emergency being declared by the state, city or federal governments. At that time, the new wording was little-noticed.
The Decorah Farmers Market board is hoping they'll be back in operation in June, but it appears they won't be able to make that call. Now that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a state emergency because of the coronavirus outbreak, the Decorah Farmers Market will have to wait until that state emergency ends before it can hold markets on the city parking lot.
