Profile of Winneshiek County Board candidate Shirley Vermace

Posted: Thu, Apr 9, 2020 11:56 AM

Decorah resident Shirley Vermace is one of three people running for District #3 Supervisor in Winneshiek County, but the only Democratic Party candidate.

Vermace is a Decorah native who graduated from the University of Iowa in 1988. She has experience working in several marketing jobs, including for the University of Iowa Alumni Association, Auburn University, KDEC/Decorah Broadcasting, and Seed Savers Exchange.

She says, "Our current board of supervisors is a tight team of five who make decisions with careful consideration of all sides to an issue, and when they disagree they do so with deep respect for shared leadership and civic responsibility. I would work to serve this county in the same way, there is no room for partisan politics on the county board of supervisors."

Vermace says county government faces challenges with secondary roads and bridges and the need for further flood mitigation, but also needs to work to develop more affordable housing, expand mental health care, and find solutions to child care shortages.

She also says the county "will be faced with new economic challenges as a result of the current health care crisis which will require critical investments in health and human services. And we must be ready to make difficult choices to recover economically."
