Area farmers have begun thinking about 2020 crop planting

Planting is still a few weeks away, however Decorah area farmers have begun checking soil temperatures to try to figure out when they'll be able to plant this spring. Soil temperatures in southern Iowa have been above 50 degrees four inches down—the temperature considered the marker for being able to plant.

Soil temperatures in Winneshiek County have been in the low 40s, however. Winneshiek County Extension agronomist Brian Lang says soil temperatures are warm enough now to plant small grains and forages.

As for checking soil temperatures yourself, Lang says, "There are many soil thermometers on the market. For example, Taylor 5989N (1-inch dial) for around $4 to $10 or a 2-inch dial unit (Taylor 5976-35) for around $9 to $15. Just Google either model or Google 'soil thermometers' for other options."
