From November 1st of last year through March 31st of this year, Decorah residents mostly got a break from the usual winter weather.
Decorah weather statistician Richard Bernatz says 2019-2020 ranked 116th out of 127 years for which weather records have been kept.
Decorah had a high temperature of at least 10 degrees in the 151 days during that time period. In an average winter, there would be ten degrees in which the thermometer never reached 10 degrees. Also, there were only 24 days when the low temperature fell below 10 degrees—significantly fewer than the average of 46 days.
Using 15 weighted measures to determine winter severity, Bernatz discovered that only one factor was winter-like this season—there were 141 days between the first snowfall and the last snowfall.
