Will Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds order school districts to remain closed for additional time?
The Iowa Department of Education has contacted the Decorah Community School District and other school districts in the state with details of two options for school districts to consider in case their emergency closure is extended or if the remainder of the school year is cancelled.
Decorah School Superintendent Mark Lane says he believes the governor will extend the current four-week emergency closure through at least Friday, April 24th. "My hope is that we will know more about a potential extension of the emergency closure by the end of the week," Lane says in a letter to parents of Decorah students.
On Tuesday morning a team of over 30 people, including board members, administrators, and teachers, began a process to make a decision about which option the district will pursue: "Voluntary Educational Enrichment Opportunities" or "Required Educational Services." Parents have been sent e-mails with links to a document explaining each option and asking for input on which option the school district should choose.
