There are six people running for the vacant District 4 seat on the Winneshiek County Board, but Fort Atkinson resident Alvin Herold is the only independent on the ballot
Herold grew up in rural Fort Atkinson, graduated from Turkey Valley High School and attended Waldorf Community College and Iowa State University for business and accounting. He moved back to Winneshiek County in 1990 to farm. For 22 years he has been a volunteer with the Fort Atkinson Fire Department and South Winneshiek EMS, including roles as the President, Vice President and Treasurer. He is a member of St. Al's parish and of the South Winn Booster Club.
Herold tells decorahnews.com he is running because his leadership, management and proven work ethic will contribute to innovative approaches to grow and serve Winneshiek County, while his knowledge in health/safety, Agricultural/land stewardship and business retention/expansion will contribute to the overall economic stability and growth of Winneshiek County.
Says Herold, "Important to me is supporting our Engineer/County staff to continue to enhance our rural road/trail infrastructure; our County Sheriff and EMS services to assure they have appropriate funding and staffing while balancing the budget; and our mental health/ resources to best serve Winneshiek County residents. With this in mind it is important to address costs, efficiencies of all departments, and assure that taxpayer dollars are greatly considered when making department-funding decisions."
