The coronavirus outbreak is taxing the supply of medical equipment and Personal Protective Equipment.

Winneshiek County Emergency Management Director Sean Snyder says a request is being made to the federal government to unlock the federal government's stockpile of personal protective equipment and distribute it to the states.

Snyder says he has placed a big order with the state for the PPE.  However, he adds, "I cannot guarantee what I will get or when I will get it."

He adds that these supplies--if released--will be prioritized and go to areas of greatest need first.

County Public Health Director Krista Vanden Brink says that's why it's important for people to stay home and not go on daily shopping trips.  She's asking people to cover their coughs and sneezes with a tissue or upper arm/elbow and to clean their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.  She says these are still the most effective steps in preventing the coronavirus.
