When the Des Moines Register began researching an article on the impact COVID-19 has had on the local music industry, they contacted Decorah resident Jeni Holton Grouws from the Avey Grouws Band.
She told the newspaper, "The coronavirus has absolutely disrupted our ability to work. Right now, live shows is where we make the bulk of our income. And the scary part is that we don't know how long it's going to last."
She continued, "Independent contractors like musicians do not have specific employers, and we don't meet some other criteria to get support. I think people are working on it, but not only have we lost our ability to make income ... [but] we also can't fall back on some of the assistance that is available to others."
