With many businesses being forced to lay off employees or temporarily close, many people will have concerns about their health insurance coverage.
Brian Huinker with Group Benefit Partners says laid off employees will have options to get health insurance with COBRA and also with the Health Insurance Exchange. He adds that most people will also be eligible for tax credits to help pay for their plan on the exchange. In most cases, the premium will be $0.
As for people who do not have health insurance coverage, Huinker says, "There is a strong likelihood that the government is going to open up a special enrollment period for uninsured people to buy insurance." Several insurance companies that offer small business coverage (under 50 employees) are allowing employees that waived coverage earlier in the year to now come on the plan. The time frame is very narrow.
Huinker recommends calling a local agent for advice. Group Benefit Partners will continue to stay open. Questions and advice will be given only by phone (563-382-2981) or by Skype appointments.
