Winneshiek County Democratic Party Chair Nathan Thompson isn't running for President. But he certainly knows how a Presidential candidate acts and talks.
That's because he has been there for all their appearances in Decorah in the last year and a half--not just your Bernie Sanders and your Joe Biden, but your Eric Swalwell and John Delaney. In fact, he thinks he's attended "19 or 20" events by Presidential candidates.
Thompson tells decorahnews.com he's heard speeches from those four candidates, as well as from Steve Bullock, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar and Andrew Yang--sometimes several speeches. As chair of the Winneshiek County Democratic Party, he can't play favorites, so he notes how local Democrats cheered and applauded for every candidate. "We're on the same page," he says.
Thompson says the Presidential candidate appearances have given "a nice energy" to organizing by local Democrats. That's important, he says, because campaigns involve "an amazing amount of work."
His term as head of local Democrats is set to end after the local county convention. Looking back, he tells decorahnews.com, "I could not have picked a more interesting two years."
