John Delaney is still running for President. Here's why.

Posted: Wed, Jan 22, 2020 6:08 PM

Former Maryland Congressman John Delaney was the very first Democrat to become an announced candidate for President.  On June 29th of 2018, he became the first 2020 candidate to visit Decorah.

Wednesday afternoon, Delaney returned to Decorah for his third campaign appearance here.  After speaking to political science students at Luther College, he spoke to a crowd of 40 people at the Old Armory BBQ restaurant on Water Street.

Some polls show Delaney having the support of two percent of voters, but the majority of polls have him at less than one percent.  He certainly could stay home in Maryland instead of finding himself in Decorah on a snowy evening.

But Delaney obviously loves to talk about the issues facing the country.  He fielded questions on a wide variety of questions at the restaurant.

He told those attending that if he were elected president, he would concentrate in the first 100 days on passing legislation which has broad bipartisan support.  He also said he would appear before Congress on a regular basis to take questions and to debate lawmakers.

Delaney called health care "the number one issue in this campaign."  He said he favors universal health care, but a so-called "mixed model," which provides Medicare to everyone, but allows them to opt out or buy additional coverage, such as supplemental plans which are offered now.  He said Medicare should be left alone because it is working.

Delaney also said he supports setting a goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050, but said in order to achieve that, work would have to be done on the science around negative emissions, which takes carbon out of the atmosphere so it can be buried.  He also said work needs to be done to improve battery storage, so the ups and downs of solar and wind production can be leveled.
