Area eighth graders and their families will join local organizers to host a Valentine's vendor event to raise funds for the students' educational trip to Washington, DC this summer.

The event began when local organizers noticed a lack of group fundraising opportunities for students participating in the trip. "A few close friends and I started the event last year when my niece was fundraising for the trip," said co-organizer Brecka Putnam. "After attending as a chaperone and seeing first-hand how much the students learn and grow on this trip, I knew we had to continue to provide this opportunity for future classes."

The local vendor community remains supportive of the event. Spaces are sold out and many vendors are making personal donations above their required fee. Meanwhile, the eighth grade vendors learn about budgeting, marketing, fundraising, logistics, and event management.

"This year's eighth graders have some fabulous items for sale," said Putnam. "Everything from candy bouquets to homemade gnomes to Decorah Vikings hair ties and mugs. Between the students and traditional vendors and crafters, there is truly something for everyone."

The event will take place at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 2. Admission is free, but attendees are encouraged to consider making a donation to help the students' efforts.
