Skimmer device discovered at an ATM in Decorah

The Decorah Police Department says a skimmer device was discovered on an ATM in Decorah on Sunday.

A skimming device is installed at locations that have devices to accept credit crads or debit cards--most commonly at a gas station pay-at-the-pump.  The skimming device captures the account information and PIN (personal identification number) when it is used by the cardholder.

Once the information is captured on the reader, it can be accessed by the thief and used to make purchases from accounts where the information was stolen from.

If you find a device that may have a skimmer, do not use it and contact the business or police immediately.

The location of the skimmer discovered in Decorah was not immediately disclosed by police.
