A Decorah couple has developed an innovative way to personally fight climate change.
Bill Deutsch and Martha Davis drop a dime in a Mason jar for each gallon of gas they purchase to fuel their car, lawn mower and chain saw. For air travel they refer to an online tool that estimates carbon tax for air flights.
This is the third year the Deutsch/Davis family have meticulously tracked their carbon consumption. In 2018 their jar collected 534 dimes. They donated $53.40 to the Winneshiek Energy District for programs to offset carbon use.
This year the couple changed their donation, still putting a dime in the Mason jar for each gallon of gas consumed, but donating $1/gallon. As a result, they wrote two checks of $251 each--one to the Winneshiek Energy District and a second to Northeast Iowa Citizens' Climate Lobby, a local group that is part of a nationwide organization formed to lobby congress to pass (HR)763 Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.
