Fire department responds to fire at a Luther dormitory

Posted: Fri, Dec 13, 2019 9:12 AM

The Decorah Fire Department was called out at 2:00 Thursday afternoon when a fire alarm with sprinkler activation went off at a residence hall on the Luther College campus.

On arrival, firefighters found the alarms were sounding and smoke was gathering on the first floor area of the dorm building.  The occupants of the building had evacuated.  Firefighters found the room where the fire had started and discovered that the fire was out.  They then worked to ventilate smoke from the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  The fire department says the sprinkler system functioned well and contained the fire to the room where the fire started.  No injuries were reported.  A damage amount is not available at this time.

The Decorah Fire Department was assisted by the Calmar Fire Department, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance, Decorah Police Department, Winneshiek County Dispatch Center and Luther Security/Faculty.
