The City of Decorah is announcing the merger of its Low Rent Housing Authority program into a similar program with Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission.
The city's program now will become part of the Housing Choice Voucher Program, which is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. The merger will take effect December 31st.
Housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, so participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
The City of Decorah, Upper Explorerland, and the Housing Authority Board will hold an open house at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday in the City Council Chambers which will include a brief program about the merger. There will also be a recognition ceremony for the retiring city low rent housing program director, Laura Olson.
