The inaugural version of a "Drift Less. Give More." food drive collected more than 200 food and pantry items, along with $540 in cash. According to the Decorah Community Food Pantry, every dollar means ten meals for hungry families, so the cash donations alone will provide over 5,000 meals.
The food drive by the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce and participating Decorah businesses encouraged a minimum donation of 5 items or $5 toward the local food pantry. In exchange for the donation, shoppers received a 5 percent off voucher to be honored at 37 Decorah area locations.
"I think this simple promotion was a heartfelt way to support those in need of a little extra support during the holiday season while also encouraging everyone to shop local," said Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kristina Wiltgen.
