Highway 9 accident kills a Fort Atkinson man

The Iowa State Patrol says an accident on Highway 9 in Decorah shortly before noon on Monday claimed the life of 79-year-old Julius Frana of Fort Atkinson.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m., Frana pulled out onto Highway 9 from Park Street and was struck by a truck headed eastbound, driven by 41-year-old Grant Linderbaum of Ossian.

Frana was airlifted to Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse by helicopter.  He was pronounced dead at the hospital.  Linderbaum escaped injuries.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, Decorah Police Department, Medflight, and Winneshiek Medical Center EMS assisted in the emergency response.
