County supervisors approve low bid on bridge project

Winneshiek County Supervisors have voted to accept the low bid on a bridge replacement project on 240th Street southwest of Ridgeway, despite the bid being $68,000 higher than estimated.

The engineer's estimate of the project was $259,000.  Brennan Construction of Lansing's low bid was $328,326.30.

Supervisors believe the bid was higher because the project will involve new techniques for bridge construction.  Similar projects in two nearby counties also were higher than anticipated.  The county board approved the low bid because around $100,000 in federal bridge funds will help pay for the project, reducing the impact on local funding.  Supervisors also felt bids would not be any lower if the project were rebid in another few months.
