Memorial services for Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady were held Wednesday at the Knapp Center at Drake University, with an estimated 1,500 people attending.
Cady died last Friday of a heart attack.
One accomplishment that Cady is being remembered for was his effort to have the Iowa Supreme Court occasionally leave Des Moines to hear oral arguments in communities throughout Iowa. In 2015, Justice Cady and the rest of the Iowa Supreme Court came to Decorah for that purpose. As part of that trip, judges visited high school students from Decorah, Waukon, Oelwein, New Hampton and Cresco.
He told students at Decorah High School that one person can promote change in the world. Cady, appearing before juniors and seniors at the school, said the history of change is full of examples of people who have said, "I think the world around me should be different."
He told the audience of students that the job of the Iowa Supreme Court involves balancing conflicting rights and determining how they should be applied "in real life situations in your community and others."
Following the Iowa Supreme Court's appearance in Decorah, Justice Cady sent a Letter to the Editor to decorahnews.com. The letter tells you all you need to know about the man: "We especially enjoyed the reception following the court session when we were able to visit with community members and enjoy the outstanding treats prepared by Dana Einck's Family and Consumer Science students with the Viking Cafe. I especially enjoyed the spinach dip made with spinach grown in the school's greenhouse."
