(The following Letter to the Editor has been submitted by Bill McBay of Decorah):
"I am concerned that there is too much unnecessary discussion of the flag policy in Decorah. It is my understanding that a public forum like the flag presentations here in Decorah are subject to the right of free speech protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Of course as Americans we may have different opinions on what constitutes good taste, acceptable advertising, offensive political messages etc.; but there is one thing that we as Americans should always agree on and that is the right to express ourselves even when it is unpopular. I realize that it may be difficult to find the moral courage to uphold this Constitutional right, but I know that our duly elected representatives will do what is right and not necessarily what is popular.
I believe that Decorah should have a generous flag policy, not only because it is required by the U.S. Constitution as a right to free speech, but also because it is the right thing to do."
