(decorahnews.com is doing a series of profiles of the candidates for contested seats on the Decorah City council, including this profile of Ward 2 candidate Dan Kirkeby):
Dan Kirkeby says he is running for the Ward 2 seat on the Decorah City Council because he believes the current city council has been too hasty in making decisions.
"The whole flag issue was the last straw for me," he tells decorahnews.com. For instance, the proposal brought before the city council included not flying the American flag on Veterans Day--something Kirkeby says is required by federal law.
He says city council members haven't been doing their homework, which he says is "irresponsible."
He contrasts the time spent on issues like flag policies with the lack of time spent on improving the city's infrastructure. Streets are not getting fixed and are in "horrendous" condition, he says. Kirkeby wants the city "to fix what it has" and not create new streets or new sidewalks.
"Let's solve problems and move forward," he appealed at a recent candidate forum. Kirkeby tells decorahnews.com he has good common sense and won't listen to special interest groups. "I listen to everybody," he says.
