18-year-old Dalton Adam of Decorah will go on trial in New Hampton on first degree murder charges starting Monday.
He faces the charge in connection with an assault last year on 46-year-old David Hansen at Hansen's home on Old Stage Road. The criminal complaint claims Adam "expected to set in motion a…chain of events which will cause or result in the death of David Hansen."
Adam has filed notice he plans to argue at trial he killed Hansen in self-defense or to defend another person.
The trial is being held in New Hampton after Adam argued that media coverage and public interest in the case in Winneshiek County would make it impossible for him to get a fair trial in Decorah. Prosecutors did not oppose moving the trial.
Monday is expected to be devoted to jury selection in the case. The trial is expected to last through Friday.
