New Winneshiek County Treasurer Brenda Kreitzer excited about her new position

Brenda Kreitzer, formerly the Winneshiek County Deputy Treasurer, was sworn in as the new Winneshiek County Treasurer Monday morning. Kreitzer, who replaces former Winneshiek County Treasurer Wayne Walter, was sworn in by Winneshiek County Auditor Ben Steines. Kreitzer's term will last until the November 3rd, 2020 election.

Kreitzer grew up in Winneshiek County and attended South Winneshiek High School. In 1978, as a senior in high school, she started working as a checkout cashier on the graveyard shift at K&S. She worked there fifteen years, gradually gaining responsibility and doing the accounting books on the weekend. K&S was the first grocery store in Decorah to use computer scanners to price items and Kreitzer, as the Pricing Coordinator, was put in charge of the transition to the new pricing system. "People forget how big a deal that was," said Kreitzer fondly.

In March 1993, Kreitzer applied for a position in the Winneshiek County Treasurer's office and was hired. In 2007, she took over as Deputy Treasurer. Kreitzer formerly served as the board president of the North Winneshiek School Board and on the Depot Outlet Board of Directors.

In her time at K&S, as well as her time in the Treasurer's office, Kreitzer has enjoyed working with the public as well as collaborating with her colleagues. "I love working with people," said Kreitzer. "I've always worked in the public and I've always enjoyed working with people."

Kreitzer is excited about her new responsibilities as Winneshiek County Treasurer. "I love a challenge," said Kreitzer. "And I love problem solving. And there are a lot of problems and opportunities in this job."

According to the Winneshiek County Treasurer's website, in her new position, Kreitzer will be "responsible for the receipt, management, disbursement, financial reporting, and investment of all monies paid to the County and serve as agent for the State of Iowa Department of Transportation and Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance." Financial management duties of the Winneshiek County Treasurer also include submitting financial records for the annual audit, keeping accurate records of monies received and disbursed, ACH transfers of tax payments, and apportioning of taxes to various entities, among other responsibilities.
