Iowa drivers now have an all-black license plate option

Motorists in Iowa now have the option of receiving an all-black specialty license plate.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is offering a numbered black specialty plate for $35 and a personalized plate for $60.

Winneshiek County Treasurer Brenda Kreitzer said the plates have been popular statewide as well as at the Winneshiek County Treasurer's office. "Our first two shipments sold out within a day," said Treasurer Kreitzer. She said initially when the plates were introduced in the summer the DOT had trouble keeping up with demand. The plates are manufactured by Iowa Prison Industries and manufacturing has increased to keep up with the demand.

Funds from the specialty plates go to Iowa's Road Use Tax Fund.
