Decorah Mayor Lorraine Borowski has proclaimed the second Monday in October--October 14th--as "Indigenous Peoples' Day" in Decorah.
The observance was suggested by Decorah resident Nori Hadley, who told Decorah City Council members Monday night that the event would be a way to recognize the people who were affected by European colonization of America.
The mayor's proclamation states "the City of Decorah will observe Indigenous Peoples' Day as an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the history, culture and contributions of indigenous peoples in our community." The proclamation also encouraged Decorah Public Schools and local businesses, organizations and other public institutions to recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day.
