A Decorah native and her husband now living in Des Moines with their 2-year-old son are being profiled by the Des Moines Register.

The article by Rekha Basu says "Pastor Alejandro Alfaro-Santiz and his wife, Maria Van Der Maaten, qualify for public assistance, but have been reluctant to apply for it for their American-born son, Luca. Alfaro-Santiz fears his U.S. citizenship application would be jeopardized—a fear that's deepened with (President) Trump's new plan to deny green cards to those who have been on public assistance."
