Proposed second Kwik Star store clears another hurdle

The City of Decorah's Board of Adjustment has voted unanimously to approve three variances to the site plan for a new Kwik Star convenience store on Montgomery Street.
The move will allow an electronic sign on the property, a shorter setback on the Commerce Drive side of the property and 27 parking spaces instead of the required 33.
The approval came following about 40 minutes of discussion about the development. Board of Adjustment member Carol Hagen added two clauses to the approval--that city officials investigate how many parking spaces would be available on Commerce Drive itself and that a traffic study be done on Montgomery Street, especially between 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays. City officials say they may put up some turn restrictions during those hours if the study shows they are warranted.
