The Decorah Fire Department's new firefighter training facility on Old Stage Road in Freeport continues to attract community support.

On Tuesday, Rotary District 5970 District Foundation Chair Don Meyer presented a $2,500 check to the Decorah Fire Department on behalf of the Decorah Rotary Club.  The local club will match the District grant, bringing the total donation to $5,000.

Decorah Fire Department firefighter Kurtis Johnson says the new firefighter training facility "has been a dream of ours for many years."  He says the $5,000 grant will specifically pay for a forced entry door which will be used for firefighter training and can be moved from location to location within the training facility.

In addition to a three-story structure for house fire training and the full-size grain bin, the training facility will include a hunter's tree stand, a trench structure and more. If all goes as planned, the facility could be available for training by the fall.  Firefighters will be able to train in simulated fire conditions

The Decorah Volunteer Fire Department will manage the training facility and make it available to firefighters operating under mutual aid agreements in Winneshiek County and nearby counties.
