(Bill asks: "What's the correct spelling of Hollihan Street in Decorah?")
The Answer Person says: "You wouldn't think there would be a question about the name of a street—just go look at a street sign to see how the name is spelled. Yes, "Hollihan" is the correct spelling of the steep one-block-long street off Day Street, parallel to Rural Avenue.
But decorahnews.com reader Bill Cary has sent proof that the street name wasn't always spelled that way—in fact, it has had several different spellings. The 1875 map posted above shows the street name was originally spelled "Holehan." By 1905, the "e" had been changed to an "a," making the street name spelling "Holahan." It's not certain when the "Hollihan" spelling started—and the street sometimes has been misspelled as "Houlihan." So the street hasn't changed locations—but it has frequently changed spellings."
