The Decorah City Council has voted unanimously to hold a special election September 24th to determine a representative in the Second Ward.
Two weeks ago the city council appointed Emily Neal to fill the unexpired term of Dan Bellrichard, who had moved out of the district. However, a petition bearing the required number of signatures to force an election was submitted to city officials. Now Neal will have to run a campaign to retain her seat on the city council.
Decorah City Clerk/Treasurer Wanda Hemesath says there will be an August 30th deadline for all people wanting to be candidates in the September election to gather signatures from at least ten residents of the Second Ward in order to be listed on the ballot on September 24th. Such petitions need to be submitted to the Winneshiek County Auditor's Office.
