Sally e-mails: "Does the Decorah pool plan to have a year end dog swim?"
The Answer Person says: "Did you know there are health risks associated with allowing dogs to swim in a pool? We didn't--until we posted a story in April about the State of Iowa Health Department cracking down on allowing dogs days at swimming pools (https://www.decorahnews.com/archived-stories/2019/04/22075.html). As the article states, the guidelines are getting stiffer on steps that must be taken after a dog day at the pool--and Decorah staffers decided to end the Dog Swim.
As a result, when the Decorah Pool announced its end-of-year schedule, here's what it looks like for the rest of this week:
Through Thursday: 1:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. public swim. Friday: morning/noon lap & aquacise only. Saturday: noon lap swim, 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. public swim. Sunday: noon lap swim, 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. public swim. The Decorah Pool will close for the season at 6:00 p.m. Sunday. (Further information at:

However, for those of you who are dog lovers, the Monona Aquatic Family Center will hold its 10th Annual Pooch Paddle Saturday from 11A:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., with a rain date of Sunday. Registration is $10.00 for the first dog, and $5 for any additional dogs, with proceeds from the event benefiting the Humane Society of Northeast Iowa.
