The Decorah Running Club is up and running--literally. The group is not only growing in numbers, it's growing in training opportunities as well.
Decorah Running Club organizer Laurie Meinholtz says she's pleased with how well the group has taken off. Meinholtz started the group in early April in order to meet people, build community, and foster accountability for runners of all abilities in the Decorah area. The group meets twice a week for a 3- to 3.5-mile run. Meinholz posts the route on the group's Facebook page a few days before the runners meet. She says everyone who shows up is encouraged to run the route at their own pace.
In addition to the weekly group runs, the Decorah Running Club is now also offering a monthly cross-training class. The classes are free but a free-will donation is collected and donated to a local charity of choice. "Last week, local fitness instructor Heidi Rockweiler donated her time to teach and we raised $155 for the Humane Society," says Meinholtz.
When the group gathers to run this Tuesday, they will pick up some tips from local runners Adam and Flannery Bohach. The group will meet at Nordic Chiropractic at 6:00 p.m. and then run together to the high school where the Bohachs will provide information on running technique and form.
