The resignation of Dan Bellrichard from the Decorah City council means there are only six city council members at this time.
Those six members will gather Monday, August 5th, to appoint someone to fill the rest of Bellrichard's term. However, the 2nd Ward position will be on the ballot this November.
County Auditor Ben Steines, who supervises all elections in Winneshiek County, says the Decorah Second Ward City Council position term "expires at the end of December THIS YEAR." That means November's election will determine who holds the position for the next four years. The person named to temporarily fill the vacancy could decide to run for election in November--or they could decline. If they do run for election, they would have to finish ahead of any other candidates.
