More information about the ORF virus

Posted: Tue, Jul 16, 2019 7:22 AM

Winneshiek County Public Health has released more information about the ORF virus, which was confirmed in a goat exhibited at the Winneshiek County Fair last week.

The updated information says, "Signs usually are 3 to 7 days after exposure to the virus.  It occurs more often if you had broken skin.  In humans, it usually develops into one single lesion.  This will heal on its own in 2 to 6 weeks.  It CANNOT be spread person to person."

Public Health officials say anyone who gets the virus may experience a mild fever, fatigue and enlarged lymph nodes.  They should be on the alert for secondary infections.
